Verruca Needling Treatment

Are you concerned about a persistent verruca? If you’ve tried at-home treatments without success, it might be time to speak to a podiatrist about verruca needling.

Verruca needling treatment is a straightforward yet revolutionary solution for stubborn warts that have failed to respond to conventional treatments. Book an appointment with City Foot Healthtoday.

What is verruca needling?

Verruca needling is a minimally invasive treatment that involves using a fine needle to puncture the verruca multiple times. The needle creates micro-trauma in the wart, which triggers an immune response to help eliminate the viral infection

The immune system recognises the virus that causes the wart as a foreign invader and attacks it, leading to the destruction of the wart. The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic to ensure that it is pain-free.

What happens at a verruca needling appointment?

During your verruca needling appointment, your treatment starts with the application of a local anaesthetic to minimise discomfort during the procedure.

The procedure typically takes around 30 minutes to complete and may require multiple sessions depending on the size and location of the verruca. Once your verruca is numb, your podiatrist will then use an empty, sterilised needle to puncture the verruca several times.

If you have more than one verruca, then your podiatrist will repeat this treatment process on each affected area. Once complete, your podiatrist will then apply a dressing to the affected areas, and you will be advised not to drive or walk whilst your foot is still anaesthetised.

Verruca needling treatment is a painless, relatively non-invasive treatment that can accelerate the healing of your verruca with minimal fuss. Some patients experience some slight discomfort as the anaesthetic wears off, but this usually recedes after two to three days.

How long does it take to work?

The healing process after verruca needling treatment varies from person to person. However, most patients start to see results within two to four weeks after the procedure. The initial response is an inflammatory reaction, which causes the verruca to become red, swollen, and sore.

This is a sign that the immune system is working to eliminate the virus. Within a few days, a scab will form over the wart, which will eventually fall off, revealing healthy skin underneath. In some cases, multiple treatments may be necessary to achieve complete resolution of the verruca.

What’s the recovery process of verruca needling?

The recovery process for verruca needling is relatively straightforward. Try to keep the treated area clean and dry for the first few days after the procedure. Avoid getting your foot wet or exposing it to dirt, as this can increase the risk of infection. It is also essential to avoid picking at the scab, as this can delay healing and increase the risk of scarring. It’s best to wear a dressing or plaster over the treated area to protect it from further trauma.

We’ll usually advise you to take a break from physical activities, such as sports, for a few days after the procedure, too. This is to allow the treated area to heal and to prevent any additional injury or soreness.

While your foot is healing, avoid tight or uncomfortable footwear — too much pressure on the treated area can hurt and could delay healing. You may find it helpful to stick with soft socks or comfortable slippers when at home.
